Opportunities at University of Minnesota Medical Center

At University of Minnesota Medical Center East and West Bank campuses, volunteers work with adult patients and care teams. The list below reflects all areas where volunteers may be placed. Please note that there might not be openings in your preferred area at the time that you apply.

Adult Library (East Bank campus)
Distribute a wide variety of reading materials via the Library cart to adult patients and their families. Assist patients and families with finding desired information, resources, and support within the library and hospital setting. 

Electroconvulsive Therapy (West Bank campus)
Provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for outpatients who are coming to University of Minnesota Medical Center for electro convulsive therapy. Visit with patients and assist staff with clerical duties. (Must be 21 or older.)

Emergency Department (ED) (East and West Bank campuses)
Support ED staff by helping patients being seen in the ED; run errands, help with equipment, etc. (Must be 21 or older.)

Guest Services (East and West Bank campuses)
Be the first person guests encounter as they enter the hospital. Create a welcoming environment. Assist guests and Information Desk staff with room numbers, ID badges, etc. Answer questions and assist guests to their destinations.

Hand Massage (East and West Bank campuses)
Visit with patients and give a very light type of hand massage called the M technique. Use of essential oils is also taught during the hand massage training.

Infusion Suite (East Bank campus)
Visit with patients receiving IV drug therapy. Help keep patients comfortable, run errands and restock supplies.

Inpatient Pharmacy (West Bank campus)
Assist staff by answering phones, tubing drugs to locations in hospital and answering requests at front window.

Medicine and Transplant Clinic (East Bank campus)
Assist staff by working with patients, making deliveries, stocking, prepping rooms and light clerical duties.

Nursing Unit (East and West Bank campuses)
Assist nursing staff on busy patient unit. Work with patients and nursing staff. 

Occupational Therapy (East Bank campus)
Observe therapies and assist at treatment sessions. 

Office Assistant (West Bank campus)
Assist departments with filing, data entry, etc. (Computer skills and experience required.

Oncology Clinic (East Bank campus)
Greet and direct patients entering the Masonic Cancer Center. Interact with patients and family members as they wait for their appointment or ride.

Patient Visitor (East Bank campus)
Support families during stressful periods of hospitalization. Provide companionship for patients and diversion from patients’ treatments and procedures.

Pet Visitation (East and West Bank campuses)
Provide pet visits to patients. Pets must be certified therapy animals.

Physical Therapy (East Bank campus)
Assist physical therapists as they work with patients. 

Retail Pharmacy (West Bank campus)
Assist pharmacy staff by delivering discharge medications throughout the hospital.

Sterile Processing & Distribution (SPD) (West Bank campus)
Assist staff with equipment requests and deliveries. 

Surgery Family Lounge (East and West Bank campuses)
Help families while their loved one is having surgery. Keep families informed during procedures, get updates as needed. Connect family with surgeon when surgery is over. Provide information about where to eat, lodging, transportation, etc.

Transitional Services (West Bank campus)
Assist staff with group activities, transport patients to community room, visit with patients one-on-one, assist patients in getting settled or ready to leave.
