University of Minnesota pediatric endocrinologist Melena Bellin, MD, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. The award recognizes science and engineering professionals who are beginning their independent research careers. Dr. Bellin has also been nominated for her first R01 grant by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease. The grant research focuses on identifying best treatments for patients with chronic pancreatitis who need their pancreas removed due to severe abdominal pain. She received the Innovator in Translational Research Award from the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics in 2019.
Pediatric gastroenterologist Elissa Downs, MD, MPH, has received a 3 year fellowship in advanced gastroenterologic care of patients with cystic fibrosis. She is 1 of 19 physicians receiving the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Developing Innovative Gastroenterology Specialty Training (DIGEST) fellowship. Dr. Downs was the only pediatric gastroenterologist in Minnesota to receive the DIGEST award in 2019.
Pediatric gastroenterologists Vikram Christian, MD, and Amrita Kahlon Salunke, MD, have joined the M Health Fairview specialty pediatric care team. Both also hold positions as assistant professors in the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Christian recently completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI. His clinical interests include feeding disorders, nutrition support, and functional gastrointestinal disorders. His research interests are feeding disorders, malnutrition, and food insecurity.
Dr. Kahlon Salunke joins the pediatric team after completing her fellowship at Children's Hospital at Montefiore, Bronx, NY. Her clinical interests include liver disease and liver transplant patients, eosinophilic esophagitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. She plans to pursue translational and clinical research in inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease.
Heli Bhatt, MD, will join M Health Fairview transplant team in July 2020 following the completion of her fellowship in pediatric hepatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Her clinical interests include acute liver failure, transplant hepatology, and endoscopies. Her research interests also include autoimmune hepatitis and acute liver failure.
