M Health Fairview is committed to the health and wellbeing of our patients, employees, and neighbors. For generations we have cared for our communities and have invested in the people and partnerships that make us stronger, together.
That’s why we’re proud to announce that our organization’s contributions to the community totaled more than $1 billion in 2019. Our 2019 Community Impact Overview highlights some of the ways that we work with and invest in community.
“Eighty percent of health happens outside of clinical care,” said John Swanholm, M Health Fairview Vice President of Community Advancement and President of Fairview Foundation. “We work with community partners to co-design and co-implement programs and services that impact our community members in the ways they’ve helped identify will make a difference in their lives.”
As a nonprofit health system and an anchor institution, an organization rooted in our communities, M Health Fairview has established meaningful partnerships and programs that reflect the health and wellbeing goals of our neighbors. It’s essential that we engage community members, collect and analyze data, and collaborate with community-based organizations, local public health departments, and other health systems to successfully accomplish this work. In addition, it helps us direct our investments to make the biggest impact.
Our 2019 investments support care, services, research, education and other programs that help our neighbors by:
“The statistics in the Community Impact report are more than just numbers,” said Swanholm. “They represent people and families whose lives we’ve touched. For example, people improved their health outcomes by participating in a program to help lower barriers to eating healthier at home. Families received support as they navigated school, healthcare, and other mainstream systems to help them build self-sufficiency. Community members attended free vaccination clinics to protect themselves and their families against the flu.”
Our work is constantly adapting to best meet the emerging needs of the community. In 2020, we were faced with the unexpected challenges of COVID-19 and civil unrest.
“We knew that to help reduce barriers to healthcare during this challenging time, our approach needed to be different,” said Swanholm. “In collaboration with community partners where we have established relationships and trust, we are hosting outdoor testing events, providing meals and economic resources to our neighbors, and connecting with those who are isolated. Our healthcare system is also offering services in drive-up clinics and telehealth visits to continue essential services.”
To drive more equitable healthcare outcomes and inclusive environments, we also started a multi-year journey to become an anti-racist organization. We are listening and acting.
Today’s environment compels us to use different and innovative approaches to our work. M Health Fairview is committed to meeting the needs of our communities today and for generations to come.
