The 34th annual Turtle Derby at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital has been cancelled due to COVID-19 safety concerns and will resume in 2021.

The event, an annual community gathering and fundraiser for patient programming at the hospital, is typically held in June on the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital grounds and draws hundreds of visitors.

“Though we are saddened that we will not be able to carry on this fun tradition in 2020, cancellation is the best course of action to ensure the well-being of our patients, families, and staff,” said Ann Shelp, chair of the hospital’s Turtle Derby Planning Committee. “We must also comply with Minnesota Department of Health’s current COVID-19 guidance limiting large gatherings.”

“We would like to express our gratitude to the community, our hospital staff, our vendors, and our partners for your past participation in the event and your continued understanding and patience regarding the cancellation,” Shelp said. “We hope the spread of the virus will soon be contained. Moving forward, we’ll focus all of our efforts on making the next Turtle Derby even better.”
