Meet 16-year-old Connie, winner of the 2018 Turtle Derby logo design contest

Connie Neumiller’s beautifully designed logo will grace event banners and t-shirts at the 2018 Turtle Derby on June 21 at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

When 16-year-old Connie Neumiller starts drawing, the ideas “flow non-stop” out of her head and onto the paper.

Connie channeled that innate creativity to design the winning emblem for the 2018 Turtle Derby at University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. The 32nd annual derby will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 21. Held on the hospital grounds, the fundraising event includes food, carnival games, and—of course—plenty of turtle races.

Connie’s beautiful logo will grace event banners and Turtle Derby t-shirts. We caught up with Connie and her parents to ask a few questions about her winning design and her enthusiasm for creative projects! Read more:

How did you hear about the Turtle Derby logo contest? Why did you choose to enter?

I was at University of Minnesota Medical Center at the time. One of the staff members there noticed how artistic I was and suggested that I enter in the logo contest. I decided to do it because it is true: I love art and design, but also because turtles are my favorite animal.

Tell us more about your inspiration for the Turtle Derby logo. How did you come up with your logo idea? What was challenging about creating the design? What was your favorite part of the process?

When I draw, ideas just flow non-stop out of my head and onto paper. The swirls on the back [of the turtle shell] reminded me of water and the ocean, which I love! The only challenging part of my turtle drawing was keeping both sides of the turtle symmetrical. My favorite part of my turtle drawing was creating the swirls on the shell.

What was your reaction when you learned your design had been chosen to represent the event? Can you describe the moment and what it meant to you?

I was filled with a great amount of joy and happiness. I even had to ask my mom twice to make sure I heard right!

Are you planning to attend the Turtle Derby later this year to see your design in action? If so, how excited are you to participate in the event?

Yes, of course! I am beyond excited to be there and see my artwork put into action!

Do you enjoy drawing and creating projects? What other interests and hobbies do you have?

I love art with all of my heart! My other interests and hobbies include: singing, songwriting, story writing, reading, pottery, jewelry making and room décor.

Do you have a message you’d like to share with the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital community? Anyone that you’d like to thank?

I would like to thank all of the staff at the hospital, and all of the people who chose my design. Plus, all of the people who will be wearing my design [on the official Turtle Derby t-shirts]! To everyone: Stay strong and follow your dreams!
