When 16-year-old Connie Neumiller starts drawing, the ideas “flow non-stop” out of her head and onto the paper.
Connie channeled that innate creativity to design the winning emblem for the 2018 Turtle Derby at University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. The 32nd annual derby will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 21. Held on the hospital grounds, the fundraising event includes food, carnival games, and—of course—plenty of turtle races.
Connie’s beautiful logo will grace event banners and Turtle Derby t-shirts. We caught up with Connie and her parents to ask a few questions about her winning design and her enthusiasm for creative projects! Read more:
I was at University of Minnesota Medical Center at the time. One of the staff members there noticed how artistic I was and suggested that I enter in the logo contest. I decided to do it because it is true: I love art and design, but also because turtles are my favorite animal.
I was filled with a great amount of joy and happiness. I even had to ask my mom twice to make sure I heard right!
Yes, of course! I am beyond excited to be there and see my artwork put into action!
I love art with all of my heart! My other interests and hobbies include: singing, songwriting, story writing, reading, pottery, jewelry making and room décor.
I would like to thank all of the staff at the hospital, and all of the people who chose my design. Plus, all of the people who will be wearing my design [on the official Turtle Derby t-shirts]! To everyone: Stay strong and follow your dreams!
