Patients are generally referred for a neuropsychological evaluation when there is a concern about cognitive dysfunction. Clinic staff utilize standardized psychological assessment tools to quantify cognitive and psychological strengths and weaknesses in a variety of domains (e.g., memory, language, attention, executive functioning, visually mediated processing, and psychomotor processing). The results from the evaluation provide clues in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of brain regions and systems, which in turn can provide information about possible etiologic considerations and treatment planning. Impressions are typically then provided to patients and the referring providers about the results from the exam. Further, concrete recommendations and guidelines are provided to the patient and the provider.
