What is the Recovery Advantage Program?

This program allows patients the luxury of having a surgical procedure performed at our outpatient surgery center, followed by a 1-2 night stay in a hotel room instead of an inpatient surgery and overnight stay at our hospital. University of Minnesota Health and DoubleTree by Hilton Minneapolis – University Area have partnered to provide qualified patients the option to recover in the comfort of a hotel room instead of a hospital. It offers expert around-the-clock on-site medical care with added benefits of more privacy, convenience and comfort.

Where is the hotel?

After your surgery at the state-of-the-art Clinics and Surgery Center, the care continues one block away at the adjacent DoubleTree by Hilton Minneapolis – University Area.

How will I get from the hospital to the hotel?

The friend or family member with you will get your vehicle from the surgery center’s valet parking. Surgery center staff will help you into your car and you’ll be driven up the block to the hotel valet. Your nurse will be waiting at the valet stand with a wheelchair to take you to your room. If you do not have a friend or family member able to assist with driving you from the surgery center to the hotel, we can help you make arrangements.

What kind of care will be provided?

All necessary care is provided on-site 24/7. This includes:

  • Advanced techniques in pain management
  • Direct and immediate contact with on-site medical staff
  • Personal nurse onsite for the duration of your stay
  • Getting the right medications at the right time
  • Assistance moving about and using bathroom
  • Keeping you properly hydrated and fed through a menu customized to your dietary needs
  • When needed, physical therapy staff will come to you at the hotel to provide care. This will be customized to individual patient’s needs and care team recommendations

How do I contact a nurse?

Nursing staff is on site and always available, 24/7. Your nurse will carry a mobile phone so you can reach them whenever you want. They will make regular visits as your physician indicates or your needs dictate. You can contact them immediately and directly by calling them with the room phone or your cellphone.

What if there’s an emergency?

People eligible for this program have been pre-screened to minimize the chance of a medical emergency. Should one occur, your on-site nurse will immediately call for an ambulance; the ambulance will quickly get you to the hospital located just two blocks away. This scenario is very unlikely.

Can I bring a guest?

Yes. We encourage program participants to have a friend or family member stay with them for the duration of your hotel stay.

What are the rooms like?

The beautiful new hotel looks, well, like a luxury hotel you’ve likely stayed at on vacation. Private bathrooms. Comfy beds. Plush towels. Cable TV. Tiny shampoos. Most rooms are handicapped accessible and, if needed, can be furnished with a special recliner that allows for comfortable relaxation after surgery.

I’m a Hilton Honors member, can I receive points for my stay?

Yes, points earned during your stay can be counted toward your personal Hilton Honors program. Please alert the program coordinators that you are a member of Hilton Honors, provide your membership ID and they will make sure you get credit for your stay.

How does payment work?

The Recovery Advantage Program will be billed to your insurance provider as a bundled charge, and will include:

  • Charges for your procedure (including professional, anesthesia, nursing, physical therapy and facility charges)
  • Medications needed during your stay
  • Hotel room charge and patient meals 
  • Medical equipment like a sling or knee immobilizer
  • Valet parking service at the Clinics and Surgery Center and hotel
  • Post-operative physical therapy as directed by your physician, which could be multiple visits in the weeks following your procedure
  • Your post-operative, follow-up visit with your surgeon at the Clinics and Surgery Center

Charges that are NOT included in the bundled payment include:

  • Medications that you will need to take at home, once you leave the hotel
  • Hotel charges incurred beyond the regular room rate (i.e. room service for guest meals, TV programming purchases, etc.)  
  • Special equipment above and beyond normal clinical protocols, like a continuous passive motion (CPM) machine or specialty bracing.

Patients who qualify and are interested in the program can speak with our financial counselors (763-782-6590) to go through the specific costs and guide you through your insurance coverage.

How do I know if my insurance will cover this?

Our financial counselors (763-782-6590) can help you assess your out-of-pocket costs if you would go through Recovery Advantage program. Each patient will be pre-approved with his or her insurance provider before proceeding with surgery and hotel stay.

At this time, Medicare and Medicaid does not cover this program.

How long will I be staying?

Most patients will stay 1-2 nights before going home. Your health care provider will discuss your specific needs with you ensuring your length of stay meets your need and comfort level.

What about meals?

You’ll receive complimentary room service meals during your stay. Customized menus from the hotel kitchen will fit any special dietary needs or medical requirements. Your guests can also order food from the hotel menu for an additional charge.

What are the benefits of this program?

When you’re more comfortable and relaxed, it helps you recover faster and more completely. Getting expert medical care in a less stressful environment is a big step to getting you back on your feet again.

Who’s eligible for the Recovery Advantage Program?

This program is for people undergoing a medical procedure or surgery that typically requires a 1-2 night hospital stay. Ideal candidates are in good health except for their specific condition and need post-operative monitoring and pain control assistance. Patients must complete a pre-operative planning and assessment session prior to surgery.
