Because most people don’t experience symptoms of lung nodules, early detection and close monitoring are key. Your doctor will consider several factors to diagnose a lung nodule, including:
- Your age – people older than 50 have increased risk
- Your history of cancer or infections that can cause scarring
- Your exposures to smokers and environmental hazards, such as asbestos
- Growth pattern of the nodule – growth of the nodule increases risk of malignancy or active infection
- Size and shape of the nodule – larger nodules and certain shapes or characteristics are more likely to be cancerous
