How to donate holiday gifts to families at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital

We have made some important changes to our donation policies in order to protect the safety of our patients, our staff, and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though we are accepting certain toy and gift donations at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital this holiday season, donation appointments must be arranged in advance with hospital staff members, and masks must be worn during drop-offs. Check out our standards below to learn more.

Every year, our generous community of donors help make the holidays special for families whose children are receiving treatment at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

We’re honored that so many compassionate individuals and organizations choose to donate toys and gifts – or offer to support our families and hospital staff in other ways. If you plan to donate this holiday season, please note that we have made some important changes to our policies in order to protect the safety of our patients, our staff, and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help potential donors understand our needs and standards in 2020, we’ve compiled this donation guide. You can also scroll down to view a helpful instructional video from our hospital staff. Thank you for your generosity and for your decision to support our families this year!

What donations do you accept?

We can only accept new, unwrapped toys, books, clothes, and crafts in their original packaging. To protect our patients – some of whom have weakened immune systems due to medical conditions or treatments – all items must come from smoke-free, pet-free, dust-free, and illness-free environments.

We cannot accept food items, candy, latex items, handmade toys or cards, violent toys or games, or items that have been in storage for several years. We also cannot accept any gift-wrapped items or items with gift tags or labels.

Do you have online wish lists?

Yes! Choosing a gift from one of our online wish lists is a great way to keep the holiday spirit alive while adhering to COVID-19 safety standards. You can purchase one or more items from our wish lists and have them shipped directly from the stores to our hospital. This limits the number of people who come into contact with the donation, further reducing the potential risk for our patients. Want to participate? Check out our donation wish list, our Target wish list, and our Amazon wish list.

What is the process for donating items to the children’s hospital?

For everyone’s safety, all donations must be arranged in advance with children’s hospital staff.

We host “Donation Days” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Monday and Thursday from Nov. 30 to Dec. 21. On those days, we have a dedicated staff member available to meet you and collect donations outside the main entrance of M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. To protect patient safety and confidentiality, donors cannot deliver gifts directly to patients. Please note: We will not be accepting holiday donations from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1 due to patient care needs.

To schedule a donation drop-off, please contact the Child-Family Life Department at 612-273-3124 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or email

Is it safe for me to donate in person? What COVID-19 precautions do you have in place?

On the day of your drop-off appointment, one of our staff members will meet you outside the hospital doors to accept your gift. All donors and hospital staff must wear masks during the visit. No more than two adult visitors are allowed to ensure safe social distancing, and no children can be present at the time of the drop-off. If you feel sick or have any COVID-19 symptoms before your visit, please stay home, contact our team to cancel your visit, and consider using our online wish lists to donate.
