Turts is one of many turtles participating in the 29th annual Turtle Derby on Thursday, June 25 on the grounds of University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. Money raised from the event will benefit children’s programming and family activities.

Turtles, sponsored by University and hospital staff as well as community members, will race in heats taking place throughout the day. The Derby will be held on the lawn of the Masonic Children’s Hospital and the starting pistol for the first heat will fire at 10 a.m. A parade, arts and crafts and other activities will continue until 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Turts Magurts took a break from his rigorous training schedule to tell us about the upcoming event.

How are you feeling about the upcoming race?
I’m turtle-ly excited for the race. It’s my first year competing since the re-naming of the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

Why is this event so important to you?
The impact of this event goes far beyond the coveted title. The money raised at the event will will benefit children’s programming and family activities at the hospital. We’ve been able to raise $20,000 in years past, and this year’s donations continue supporting such a turtle-rific cause.

How can people get involved?
You can attend the turtle derby with family and friends to cheer on all of the racing turtles. You can also sponsor your own turtle.

What else do you want your fans to know?

Rain or shine, I will have the chance to compete for the “Grandest Turtle of All.” However, if weather is unfavorable, the event will be postponed to Friday, June 26. My fans can use our valet parking service at the front entrance of Masonic Children’s Hospital, or park in either the Red or Yellow ramps accessible from Riverside Ave. and 23rd Ave. S. near the hospital.

Come prepared for food, fun, games, and an all-around great time. Arrive early for the community parade!
